The history of the Kleeberg Cross.

Since 2017, the Kleeberg Cross has become a established name in the cyclocross world. What started as a local cyclocross race within the Limburg Cross series quickly grew into a national season opener for both the Netherlands and Belgium. For years, the Kleeberg Cross has guaranteed a challenging course, a first-rate organization, and a strong field of participants, solidifying its place on the agenda of many cyclocross riders.

From Regional Success to UCI Level

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, the Kleeberg Cross made the leap to the highest level: a UCI-classified race on a redesigned and even more challenging course. The rain provided ideal conditions, with the “pratsj” (mud) creating a true slogging match. The organization received rave reviews from the UCI, the KNWU (Dutch Cycling Federation), participants, and experts. Even cyclocross legend Sven Nys was impressed, stating, “I am impressed with the course. I think this could become a very beautiful, major course, perhaps even a World Cup course.” Pim Ronhaar, the winner of the UCI Elite Men’s race, also agreed.

A Challenging and Iconic Course

In 2023, the rain fell at just the right time again, resulting in a challenging course with the famous and notorious wet zone. The steep climbs and descents, off-camber sections, technical turns, and a grueling uphill meadow made the course technical and incredibly tough. The wet zone has been a point of discussion for years.

Some found it an adrenaline rush and plunged into the mud with full conviction. For others, it was a true ordeal. During the races, ankles disappeared deeper and deeper into the mud. In 2024, we chose the solution of laying a bridge over the zone. This provides a safer course for everyone. The Kleeberg Cross remains an absolute must for both participants and the public, proving itself year after year as a top-tier race on the international cyclocross calendar.
